In the mid-1980s, the Togolese government embarked on a policy of privatization of strategic public enterprises.
The Togolese market being a little limited to guarantee a growing development of these new private companies, the government wanted to favor exports by creating a free zone of transformation for export.
The main objective was to reduce the unemployment rate by offering employment to young people. As such, it was established in 1989, with the strong support of cooperation agencies such as UNDP, UNIDO, CIPO, USAID.
SAZOF, the Free Zones Administration Company, is the structure that manages the status of a free zone and assists investors in the various formalities.
Several companies are located in the free zone and operate in various sectors of activity (the plastic, pharmaceutical, agro-food, metal, wood, clothing, synthetic hair, cosmetics, jewelery, etc.). These companies benefit from the customs tax benefits provided for by law.
The promoters of the installed companies are of thirteen (13) different nationalities with in mind, the companies belonging to Togolese (29% of the portfolio).
The objective of SAZOF for the next five (5) years is to double the number of companies and improve the services provided by the institution. SAZOF is also working towards the continuous improvement of the working conditions of the employees of the free zone. liste2:
